During our Pets and Specialty Vets radio show on Saturday, the doctors mentioned the use of Peroxide in households. We wanted to follow up with two points - 1 - Peroxide is sometimes used to induce vomiting after a dog has eaten something they shouldnt. NEVER give peroxide until you have spoke with a veterinarian. Either call your vet, VREC or poison control for help. *(The ASPCA animal poison-related emergency hotline is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. If you think that your pet may have ingested a potentially poisonous substance, call (888) 426-4435. A $65 consultation fee may be applied to your credit card.)* Peroxide induces vomiting by causing massive irritation to the lining of the stomach which makes the patient vomit. It can also cause a great deal of harm and has been known to make an animal vomit blood! 2 - Peroxide really shouldnt be applied to wounds. Everyone remembers the good ol days when we would scrape our knees and our friends mother would pour a bottle of peroxide on our wound. The only thing that stemmed the burning pain, was the awe of watching that frothing mess where our skin used to be. Peroxide is cytotoxic - which means it actually causes cells to burst. Yes, this certainly cleans a wound but it damages tissues also. Medicine has moved far forward since, and peroxide is rarely applied to wounds in a medical setting. If your pet has a wound, please contact your vet or VREC for assistance and more appropriate alternatives to peroxide. Your dog or cat (and the neighbor kid) will thank you for it.
