During the Cold War, then-President Reagan and Soviet Premiere - TopicsExpress

During the Cold War, then-President Reagan and Soviet Premiere Mikhail Gorbachev were trying to negotiate a series of treaties (beginning with the INF Treaty to eliminate intermediate range nuclear forces). Both wanted to reduce the risk of a nuclear, world-ending conflict plus affirm detente. Their political enemies called these leaders a variety of names, which they ignored. Reagan, that hero of the Republican party and bastion of American values of the time, introduced the Star Wars program, with the idea of building an anti-nuclear missile defense shield and negate the Soviet threat of initial or retaliatory strikes against the US. He got Congress to continue to allocate funds. Gorbachev did not want Star Wars, and at each meeting, INSISTED that Star Wars be part of the discussion, that as part of any negotiation, the program would be eliminated. They were deathly afraid that with Star Wars actually operational, the USSR would be in a weak position in future negotiations for anything. Session after session would end in failure because of this insistence on the elimination of Star Wars. In the end, the President and Congress won out, treaties were negotiated and signed, and only after the threat was reduced was Star Wars eventually defunded. Reagan got what he wanted: reduce USSR threat, and let Soviet Communism die from its own internal rebellion. In like manner, President Obama is standing his ground on the AHA / Obamacare. He simply is not going to put it on the table because the covert agenda indicates that those against it are seeking to eliminate it outright or piecemeal. Another year? I can only speak for myself (I will refrain from doing like political others by invoking phraseology like, A majority of Americans, because I dont speak for them). That caveated, I hear overtly postpone Obamacare a year to work out kinks, yet covertly perhaps its to continue to use spin to convince enough people to their opinion. Fear tactics, emotive speeches, blame games from both sides, and in the meantime, honest citizens not working, ripple effects being felt soon in various parts of the economy. Given their adamant target of destroying Obamacare, I simply do not trust the conservative caucus who are holding out. Bottom line: I dred to compare the Tea Party caucus who have politically blackmailed Speaker Boehner into the current DC log jam by insisted on defunding Obamacare to the Soviets of the Cold War trying to get rid of Star Wars, but still, one can see a comparison that the future will tell if thats not too far off the mark...
