During the hurricane of September 18, 1926.... Judge Beckton Isler, assistant keeper of the Hillsboro Lighthouse, remained at his station atop the lighthouse continuously for thirty-two hours recording weather conditions (winds reached 132mph) and making sure that the light beams were functioning. David F. Butler, in his book Hillsboro Lighthouse (1997), quoted Isler’s recollection of his storm experience: The heavy winds and surging sea kept hammering away at the tower until I was certain it would topple into the Hillsboro Inlet. The vibration in the lighthouse was terrific, and the relentless wind blew off the roof of the boathouse, and the sea carried the small boat away. Despite the violent hurricanes and storms during its long history, the Hillsboro Lighthouse has remained a viable testament to its excellent structural integrity.
