During the summer months we see an incredible increase of animals. We are currently caring for over 40 dogs and 150 cats. Due to this increase, we unfortunately find ourselves having to turn surrenders away. Even though we have a dog surrender waiting list that you can put your name on, and even if we can promise to take your cat in tomorrow after a few have been adopted, we definitely understand the frustration. Surrendering an animal is emotional, and making the difficult decision to come here in the first place is a hard one. Being told to come back at a later time after you’ve made the decision is even worse, and just prolongs the hurt. We get that, and we really feel for the people who are faced with the decision of rehoming their pets. But we ask you - the person needing to surrender - to understand that we are currently entrusted with the care of over 190 animals. Animals that came in as strays, or were surrendered just like you need to surrender yours; with previous owners who are trusting us to do what’s in the best interest of their furry family member. We ask two things of those in need of surrendering their animals. First, and most importantly, please do not leave your animal in our lobby, on our lawn, etc. Abandoning animals in carriers, boxes, kennels, etc. on our property will in turn end up just hurting them. Yes, we will find them and take them in. We will care for them and love them just like they’re our own. But we will have to hold them for a number of days to legally ensure we have acquired ownership and can then put them up for adoption. When during a typical surrender, the owner’s signature on our form is all we would need to process the animal, making their time with us much shorter if they are surrendered legally. We also lose the opportunity to fill out a personality profile that greatly increases their likelihood of finding their perfect match. Any medical history, likes/dislikes, favorite foods, etc. will never be known to help them transition easier into a new home environment. We ask you to please surrender your animal to us, rather than abandon them at our facility. Second, we ask you to make sure you’ve tried every option to prevent situations like the aforementioned from happening. Call before you come in to surrender, check out websites like this one: humanesociety.org/animals/resources/tips/finding_responsible_pet_home.html?credit=web_id83620033 that help you try to rehome your pet yourself, or even speak with an adoption counselor who can try to suggest different ways to help you keep your pet in your home. We will take in your surrendered animals as soon as we have space available. And if that’s not today, then please help do your part to ensure your animal is re-homed with the best chance of finding his/her perfect match.
