During the winter, it takes our crew a couple months to prune all of our vines. In most blocks, the first pass is completed by a tractor mounted pre-pruner(pictured below). This machine, with an array of spinning blades, does a very efficient job of getting most of the canes off the vine, cutting them into small pieces to encourage natural decomposition on the vineyard floor. The second pass is made by hand with pruning shears. The workers are able to focus on the important technical aspects of pruning each spur on the vine without having to deal with the heavy brush. The partial mechanization of this process is great for efficiency and quality.
