During these holidays, take a moment to reflect on the lives of all those who are caught up in webs of violence, no matter the source of the conflict. There is a rising intolerance in our society for violence, yet we find ourselves mired in a culture that celebrates it, that glorifies the use of force as a means to an end, a society that makes heroes out of those who are imbued with the responsibility of imposing this force upon others. When force is mandated by law and effected without discretion, many get caught in the crossfire and become wounded emotionally and physically and spiritually for life. These are the kind of traumas that change individuals, traumas that there is no coming back from... They are also the ones we never hear about, the invisible amongst us, and they bear a burden most of us cannot comprehend.
