Du’aa of the Fasting Person The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Three prayers (supplications) are not rejected: the prayer of a father, the prayer of a fasting person, and the prayer of a traveller.” [Al-Bayhaqi - Classed as Sahih by Shaykh al-Albaani] Commentary: In this Hadith the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) informs us of three prayers (du’aa’: supplication) which are not rejected and one of them is the prayer (supplication) of the fasting person. As for the time of this Du’aa’ (supplication), some of the scholars (may Allah have mercy upon them) said the du’aa’ should be made, before iftaar (breaking the fast), at Maghrib, because this combines weakness and humility, and because the person is still fasting. All of these are means of having one’s du’aa’ answered. After breaking the fast, one is relaxed and happy, and may become negligent. But there are also ahadith from the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) which show that du’aa’ may also be made after breaking the fast. There are also other ahadith which also speak of the virtue of the du’aa’ (supplication) of the fasting person, such as the following: The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Every time the fast is broken Allah has people whom He ransoms.” [Ahmad, 21698; classed as Sahih by Shaykh al-Albaani in Sahih al-Targheeb, 1/491] The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Allah ransoms people every day and night – i.e., in Ramadan – and every day and night the Muslim has a prayer that is answered.” [Al-Bazzaar; classed as Sahih by Shaykh al-Albaani in Sahih al-Targheeb, 1/491] It is also from the Sunnah of the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) when breaking the fast to say what is narrated by Ibn ‘Umar (radi Allahu anhu) that the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) used to say when breaking his fast: “Dhahaba al-zama’ wa abtalat al-‘urooq wa thabata al-ajr in sha Allaah (Thirst is gone, the veins are moistened and the reward is certain if Allah wills).” [Sunan Abu Dawood, 2357; Classed as Hasan by Shaykh al-Albaani] And Allah knows
