Déclaration du Centre Carter sur l’assassinat du député Mohamed Brahmi Le Centre Carter condamne fermement l’assassinat du député Mohamed Brahmi, membre de l’Assemblée Nationale Constituante et leader du Courant Populaire (El Tayyar El Chaabi). Un assassinat survenu le jour de la commémoration de la proclamation de la République tunisienne et six mois seulement après l’assassinat d’un autre leader de l’opposition, Chokri Belaïd. Durant l’année écoulée, plusieurs actes de violence ont été perpétrés contre des membres de partis politiques, des activistes, des journalistes et autres citoyens. Le Centre condamne fermement de tels actes, et appelle tous les Tunisiens et notamment les acteurs politiques et sociaux à faire preuve de retenue, à rejeter toute forme de violence et à redoubler d’efforts pour encourager le dialogue dans cette phase critique du processus de transition. Le Centre réitère son appel aux autorités de prendre toutes les mesures nécessaires pour lutter contre la violence politique et les discours incitant à la haine. Le Centre appelle les autorités à enquêter sur l’assassinat de Mohamed Brahmi et de Chokri Belaïd, ainsi que sur les autres crimes à motivation politique afin d’éviter que ne s’enracine en Tunisie une culture de l’impunité. Le Centre appelle également les autorités à garantir une protection renforcée des libertés d’expression et de convictions politiques et religieuses. Ces libertés devraient être inscrites dans la nouvelle Constitution, un projet pour lequel Mohamed Brahmi a consacré la plus grande partie de son mandat de député à l’Assemblée Nationale Constituante. His assassination comes on the anniversary of the declaration of the Republic of Tunisia, and just six months after the targeted killing of opposition leader, Chokri Belaïd. The past year has seen acts of violence perpetrated against political party members, activists, journalists, and other citizens. The Center condemns all such acts in the strongest terms, and appeals to Tunisians and to all social and political actors in the country to exercise restraint, reject violence, and to redouble-efforts at dialogue during this critical leg of the country’s transition. The Center further renews its call for the authorities to take on all necessary measures against political violence and to strongly condemn hate speech. The Center urges the authorities to investigate the assassination of Mohamed Brahmi, Chokri Belaïd and other apparently politically motivated crimes, in order to prevent a culture of impunity from taking root in Tunisia. The Center also calls on the authorities to institute stronger protections for the freedom of speech, political belief and religious belief, including through the new constitution, which Mohamed Brahmi dedicated much of his service at the National Constituent Assembly to the objective of realizing.
