#EBOLARESPONSE Just days before the IOM managed #Ebola treatment unit in Tubmanburg, #Liberia receives its first patients, our team of doctors, nurses, sprayers and hygienists are working to mimic a typical ward round and make sure each person is fully prepared to provide better care while staying safe. As they get dressed in protective gear, treat a patient or take off their gear, each one watches their buddy to spot missteps, confirm that the other is fine, and taking the right action. As IOM Infection Prevention Officer, Ursula Eyer explains, “We go as a pair. I watch you and you watch me. When dressing to enter the ETU my buddy checks that I am fully covered. When we are inside she checks to see that I am following the right procedures to avoid contamination and correctly give treatment. ” These healthcare workers are practicing standard operating procedures for Ebola clinical care as taught by WHO and the Liberia Ministry of Health and Social Welfare. The multinational team represents a wealth of experience gained in Kenya, Liberia, Zimbabwe, England, U.S.A, Uganda and Sri Lanka. The staff at the treatment unit are getting set to offer quality care to Ebola patients in and around Tubmanburg, starting with those receiving treatment at the Bomi county Community Care Centre. There have been 6,525 suspected, probable and confirmed cases of Ebola in Liberia since late March. Through the end of October, 2,697 deaths have been attributed to the disease. Health care workers in the country have been particularly affected, with 315 reported cases and 157 deaths since the start of the #EbolaOutbreak. Photo: @ IOM 2014
