EDITORIAL of latest issue of RECORDER Editorial There cannot be a greater bliss than ignorance. The best example is Homoeopathy and specially Organon of Medicine. In the present times, the less you read, the happier you are: knowing, reading and being aware takes away the peace of life. A new syllabus for BHMS course is in the waiting for implementation. There are many good things in it. But one change which will over-shadows all the merits of the new syllabus is that Organon of Medicine and Materia Medica will not be in the curriculum of 1st BHMS Examination. For namesake class hours and a syllabus will be allotted but no examinations of these two subjects will be held. And as can be expected when no examinations is to be conducted for Organon of Medicine and Materia Medica, no serious attention will be given to it by the teachers or by the students. So practically we are going to have thousands of students studying Homoeopathic Course (BHMS) who will not know what Homoeopathy is till they complete 1st BHMS. They will be studying Anatomy, Physiology and Pharmacy. This information is complemented by the fact that with few exceptions almost all who study Homoeopathy come only by compulsion and not by choice. This new syllabus will breed a new generation of Homoeopaths who will have knowledge and degree but no conviction. The purpose of writing this is not to blame or opposes anybody. Whoever may have drafted the syllabus is immaterial. The question is now of all times when such learned persons are holding the chairs which decides the direction and fate of Homoeopathy, who are known for their wisdom, rationality, love and conviction for Homoeopathy, will this devastating syllabus be implemented? Whatever may be the reason and argument in favour but deep in their heart they also know that when a student studies Homoeopathy without Organon of Medicine and Materia Medica he can have a degree in Homoeopathy but he can never become Homoeopathist. When Organon of Medicine is taught to a newcomer, as all teachers are aware, teaching of aphorisms comes much later. Before that he is given arguments and is convinced about the efficacy of Homoeopathy or if the term may be used - he is brain-washed and converted to Homoeopathy. And in the process fear of examination acts as the guiding and binding force. The fact that an examination will be held on the subject and it is necessary that you pass the examination will compel the students to pay attention and to emphasise on these two subjects, Organon of Medicine and Materia Medica, which are the two foundation pillars of Homoeopathy. Doubtlessly if these two subjects are taught with their due importance and examinations are held, the mind-set of the students will be moulded from the beginning and they will be benefitted by the deep insight to the faculty of Homoeopathy and it will help in training and enhancement of their capability of being true Homoeopath. This is an appeal to all who can bring the change, an appeal to their same spirit which made them stand against permitting allopathic practice by Homoeopaths. It is a call to their good Homoeopathic sense to do whatever is required, so that this self destructive syllabus is not implemented. Homoeopathic profession for years to come will be grateful to them for they took a decision which stopped the destruction and annihilation of Homoeopathy in India. History will remember them as policy makers who shaped the future of Homoeopathy. Let a student of Homoeopathy learn Homoeopathy from the 1st day of his entry into the Homoeopathic course. One cannot learn Homoeopathy without learning Organon of Medicine and Materia Medica. Dr. Subhas Singh ----------------------
