Originally, it was a device that told the air bags when to deploy and the ink wasn’t dry on the original design before somebody said, “hey, we could record that info.” So now the information is recorded, the last interval of time before a bag deployment. Actually, that is just when it stops. But it is not just the info needed for bag deployment that is recorded. Vehicle speed Engine speed Steering angle Throttle position Braking status Force of impact Seatbelt status Airbag deployment That would be great, if it stopped there. You can prove things in an accident, figuring you were not at fault. Do you think it will stop there? But it is currently only accessible via direct connection. Oh, wait, Mercedes is going to make it WiFi accessible so it sends back maintenance information. Did you see maintenance on that list? Nissin wants to hook it up through your automobile OBD. It is a creeping government mandate. With Obamacare comes the government taking money directly out of your bank account, you don’t have a choice. But it will only be Obamacare, right??
