EFF statement on second Anniversary of the marikana massacre 15 August 2014 The Economic Freedom Fighters marks the second anniversary of the brutal slaughter of the 34 mineworkers by the murderous ANC regime in Marikana. The workers, all black, were demanding a living wage of R12,500 per month and better working conditions from the multinational mining company, Lonmin. Two years later, justice has still not been served for the fallen miners whose lives were taken in full view of the world. Those responsible, from the police who obeyed murderous instructions up to the National Police Commissioner, Riya Phiyega, and the then Minister of Police, Nathi Mthethwa, still enjoy normal lives and remain in positions of power without any consequence, either in terms of suspensions, termination of employment and criminal charges. The EFF reasserts its commitment to the struggle for the realisation of the R12,500 minimum wage for all mineworkers in South Africa. The EFF is the only party that boldly campaigned on this minimum wage during South African general elections this year. The EFF reasserts its call for those responsible for the Marikana Massacre to be brought to book, including the Deputy President of the ANC, Cyril Ramaphosa, who abused his political influence through placing undue pressure on the police to end the strike of workers. Marikana shall always be the key event that signifies the impatience of the people with the ruling party and expose them as the defender and frontline party of white monopoly capitalism. Marikana is the key event that marks the new era to intensify the struggle for economic freedom with absolute opposition to the government of the day. It shall remain a powerful reminder for why the EFF exists. The ANC government’s consistent commitment to neoliberal economic policies is the reason there is no transformation in the mining sector and workers remain treated as cheap and easily disposable labour. This is why the nationalization of mines is the only policy that will restore dignity to the mining industry and end the super exploitation of workers. It is also the only policy that will ensure that these God given mineral resources benefit the local economy of South Africa and its people. The EFF will always draw inspiration from the 34 mineworkers and celebrates them as economic freedom fighters whose spear has been picked up by the Economic Emancipation Movement for an uncompromising attainment of economic freedom in our lifetime.
