EGYPTIAN AMERICANS MOBILIZE IN SUPPORT OF DEMOCRACY IN EGYPT: CALL UPON US ADMINISTRATION TO DENOUNCE COUP WASHINGTON DC - The Egyptian people have come out en masse to protest against the latest attempt by the military to thwart the peaceful path to democracy. The coup against Egypt’s first democratically elected President is unacceptable and must not stand. The United States must take a leading and vocal role in genuinely promoting democracy in Egypt and around the globe. We call upon the Obama administration to halt military aid to Egypt immediately and publicly demand that the army return to its barracks and release all political prisoners arrested in the last two days. US credibility is on the line and its foreign policy interests in the Middle East are at stake. EADHR Spokesman, Shaker Elsayed said “Getting the Obama administration to publicly denounce the military coup in Egypt is in fact helping America to be true to its own principles and genuine interests as a democratic nation.” Egyptian-Americans for Democracy and Human Rights (EADHR) have mobilized their supporters for a rally in front of the White House today calling on the Obama administration to take a principled stand against military rule in Egypt. A leading member, Dr. Akram Al-Zend summed up Egyptian feelings, “In spite of all the propaganda and the detractors of democracy Egyptians once again are showing the world that they peacefully seek democracy. As Americans we should fully support them.” - END - RALLY in Lafayette Park WASHINGTON DC 6:00 PM Egyptian-Americans for Democracy and Human Rights (EADHR) is a grass-roots organization established to support and help Egypt on its path to democracy. EADHR seeks to monitor human rights in Egypt and to educate the American public and policy makers to support democratic reforms in word and action.
