EHSs JR. FORMS WERE ACTIVE CADETS TOO EHSs Army Cadet program was one of the very few activities where the Lower Forms actively mixed and seriously (yes, seriously) socialized with the Upper Forms. It was obvious that the dreadful WWII experiences of parents of EHSers had an effect on the EHS Cadet experience. Upon donning Cadet uniforms, chaps changed, they bonded across age groups, worked as a team, readily accepted challenges, and obviously toughened-up. Goofy Lower Form kids would suddenly would get serious, real serious. A lot of the Cadets I met had relatives who died in WWII; at this exact same time (1970-71) the Vietnam war was in full swing. So young Aussie men were still risking their lives at a real shooting war. Myself, upon going back to USA, I would have to sign up for the draft, so there was a serious dimension for me too (yup....). In a considerable number of the pix I took at EHS you would see EHSers spontaneously flashing the 2-fingered peace sign. These were not youthful signs of rebellion, but the aspirations of truly patriotic young Aussie men & women wishing for a peaceful and better future. The first pix was taken at the Ballarat Army Base where Cadets frequently had training camps. The camaraderie between the younger and older Cadets is obvious. The second pix was at EHS near the Cadet armory in the north-west corner of the school property. Sorry about blurry pix; my camera at the time was pretty crappy (an American colloquial phrase for not-so-good!).
