This has been Cristiano Ronaldos year, a 12-month carnival of extraordinary forward play. It has been so good, even the man who doesnt like him had to admit it. Yes, it was justified, Lionel Messi noted through gritted teeth. It was deserved. Much is made of the tensions that exist between Ronaldo and Messi but this is not a rivalry to promote something. The world number three told organisers of the Sydney International she was unable to take her place in the tournament after falling ill in China over the weekend. Halep won the Shenzhen Open at the weekend even though she said she was already feeling sick. The 23-year-old had hoped to recover before her first scheduled match in Sydney, where she was the top seed, but said she was still unwell. During the tournament in China I got this problem in my stomach, she said. I didnt play for three days. I was waiting until today to see if I was ready to play again, but I feel like I cannot play. Its tough to play a tournament like this so unfortunately I decided to withdraw. Halep, runner-up at last years French Open, said she expected to recover in time for the Australian Open, starting next Monday, where she is among the favourites. You never know with the stomach, but hopefully in two or three days Ill be ready to play again, she said. Right now I just need to think about recovering, then I will worry about matches later. Radamel Falcao was left stunned by Louis van Gaal’s decision to drop him at the weekend and fears he faces an uphill struggle to persuade Manchester United to keep him at the end of the season. United manager Van Gaal shocked the 29-year-old by leaving him out of the 18 that lost at home to Southampton and watched the game at Old Trafford having received no explanation. It is understood that Falcao and Van Gaal did talk at training at Carrington on Monday, with the Dutch coach telling the striker that the decision was made purely for tactical reasons. However, Sportsmail understands that Falcao increasingly wonders if he will ever manage to truly impress Van Gaal as he looks to persuade United to turn a one-year loan deal in to a permanent £43million transfer from Monaco in the summer. The elder Castro had not been heard from nor seen in public since his brother Rauls historic U.S.-Cuba rapprochement last month, and the silence has re-ignited speculation about his health. Fidel is doing very well, Maradona told the regional Telesur station, as he held up the letter. Heres the signature ... Im showing it to you so you can show it to the world. Chatter about his demise has dogged Castro periodically since the 1959 Cuban revolution, but became more frequent in recent years because of health problems that forced him to step down from power in favour of his younger brother. The last public word from Fidel Castro was an Oct. 17 column in state media. Set up to counterbalance Western-based TV networks like CNN and the BBC, Telesur is financed by leftist governments in Latin America, Venezuela in particular. ---- FIFA Team of the Year: FIFPro World XI includes Manchester United star Angel di Maria, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo • Manuel Neuer is selected as the goalkeeper after winning World Cup • Defence is Sergio Ramos, Thiago Silva, David Luiz and Philipp Lahm • Andres Iniesta, Toni Kroos and Angel Di Maria form a three-man midfield • Lionel Messi, Arjen Robben and Cristiano Ronaldo complete the line-up • Real Madrid superstar Ronaldo won his third Ballon dOr trophy OTHER WINNERS AT 2014 BALLON DOR GALA Ballon dOr: Cristiano Ronaldo Womens player of the year: Nadine Kessler Puskas award: James Rodriguez Mens coach of the year: Joachim Low Womens coach of the year: Ralf Kellermann FIFA presidential award: Hiroshi Kagawa FIFA fair play award: FIFA volunteers ----------- Luis Suarez has been named in the Fifa FifPro reserve World XI for 2014, despite being banned for four months of the year. The Hammers are enjoying a fine season compared to the struggling Toffees, with the sides set to meet in a third round FA Cup replay on Tuesday. Im a little bit more flexible than Roberto - he is a total believer in one style, said Allardyce. But Allardyce says Evertons problems this season are down to playing in the Europa League and more injuries. Everton finished fifth last season in Martinezs first season in charge to qualify for European football, but are currently three points above the Premier League relegation zone. West Ham are in seventh spot and 11 points better off than the Goodison Park side. You become flexible as time goes on, added Allardyce. Flexibility teaches you that you have a philosophy in the way you want to play, but if that way of playing doesnt suit the players you cannot keep that philosophy. The FA Cup replay will take place at Upton Park after a 1-1 draw away at Everton and the winner will visit Bristol City or Doncaster Rovers in the next round. Martinez has played down reports linking him with Cardiff keeper David Marshall and, despite speculation over the futures of Samuel Etoo and Seamus Coleman, he is not envisaging any major departures. We are not entertaining that speculation of big sales, said the Spaniard. We are not going to sell our big assets in the window, so I think all those stories and admiration from the outside are just a waste of time. ------------ West Ham boss Sam Allardyce is expected to name his strongest possible side for their FA Cup third-round replay. Only Diafra Sakho (back) and Cheikhou Kouyate (international duty) are expected to be unavailable. Everton manager Roberto Martinez will again be without several players for their trip to the Boleyn Ground. Tim Howard (calf), Sylvain Distin (groin), Tony Hibbert, Leon Osman (foot), Darron Gibson and Steven Pienaar (both knee) remain sidelined. --- Everton manager Martinez, meanwhile, confirmed he had made some enquiries about goalkeepers this month: It is something we have done for a while now, but nothing has been conclusive or done in a way that we can announce any names. Im not interested in bringing in a short-term goalkeeper - well look at the options, but if we bring in anyone, it has to be someone who can stay with us for the long term. We are going to explore that avenue and if we find the right personality, well act on it. Schalke have purchase option for the 21-year-old, who was signed by ex-City boss Roberto Mancini in August 2012. However, he has struggled for first-team action under current boss Manuel Pellegrini and has not played in the league for City this season. His last game for the club was a 3-0 defeat by Arsenal in the Community Shield in August. The Serbia international made only 11 league starts under Pellegrini last season. ---------- Midfielder Paul Pogba will not be sold despite interest from a host of European clubs, according to Juventus general director Giuseppe Marotta. Manchester United are reported to be preparing a £77m bid to bring the 21-year-old Frenchman back to the club. Every European club is watching him and been in contact, Marotta said. However, we want to have a strong team made up of champions. We have an important player in Pogba and we dont have a need to sell him. The France international played a key role in helping Juve clinch their third successive Serie A title last season, scoring seven goals and setting up seven more in 36 appearances. What was a promising player has become a reality, Marotta added on Sky Italia. Pogba, who joined Juve from United on a free transfer in 2012 and recently signed a contract extension until June 2019, is also a reported target of Chelsea and Manchester City.
