ELEGY TO MY DEE, UGWUM M. EZEIGBO (PhD), 1943-2013 1. We were by the pool, remember? I still see the sun shining and the sparkles glistering. Eko le Meridian, remember? You made the Greeks my lunch to pay, and Chapman to provide I still feel the warmth you showed for me to seek and find to eat. There was something in those eyes of yours, They could see pains others bear. You can choose to pass a bleeding heart, But your own eyes won’t let you. 2. You loved to hear me speaking; You said it thrilled you, Though, I never knew the reason why; because you never told me. But you saw in me a gift that can’t ever be ignored Am still awed by the choice of me to anchor all your shows. 3. I can make an index of them all - Weddings, birthdays, and receptions I cannot tell them all, You fed us all at Mainland; You made family the centre of the joy in Joy your wife And made your Joy the centre of the joy you had for all to share. There was something in that joy of yours It thrilled us all, remember? There were teary eyes and laughter times, Moments of jokes, remember. 4. You brought homes together remember? Since then no one else cared to care for struggling homes; You made them dance remember? It was your way of putting smiles upon a gloomy face I still see them hand in hand, trekking home full of smiles. There was something in that heart of yours That’s so different, you don’t know When a scholar and a wealthy man Humbles himself with commoners - That’s the mind of Christ. 5. You signed those cheques remember? For the widow and the needy, Dee your cash you cared to share, And for God’s work, remember? In your arms brotherly love found its own very habitat. There was something in those arms of yours They cared so much, remember? They were there for them who had no help They carried me, remember. 6. Now you’ve joined them all in heaven - Forerunners of that great Ezeigbo’s dynasty, Can you see my Professor Ihee? I know with these your love for us just cannot stand a chance I still will seek your Maker’s consent to let us have you again. 7. Three decades of knowing you Three decades of knowing a man of truth, Three decades knowing you, Dee Three decades of knowing reliability that’s evernal. If I have to walk this earth again I will my Dee remember When I’ll walk the shores of streets of gold I will my Dee remember. 8. But Dee you longed to live and live you did, For when death thought it had you- You proved it wrong and came back strong. Say it Dee, you defeated death, You left at the time of your choosing And that’s what matters. 9. And now to all that gather to bid you bye All who read these lines with little care, Give thought to the love that drew salvation’s plan. For to hug Jesus is to face tomorrow with Dee’s courage And tell death you don’t decide when I go home. The decision is my Master’s to make.
