*EMERGENCY NOTICE* Dear Family & Friends, Carolyn missed a step Saturday morning and fell resulting in a Burst L-3 (yup BURST is the actual term). Or more simply put for us laymen she broke her back. At first we thought she was facing an emergency surgery of a fairly complicated nature with its own inherent dangers. However after much examination, x-rays, cat scans and an MRI followed by more x-rays it was determined that she was lucky in that she had no nerve damage at this time and the best course of action was to just cinch her up in a brace (2 different ones actually) and let her heal. The good doctors will of course continue to monitor and take follow up x-rays but if she can keep her back perfectly straight 24-7 for at least the next 3 months all should heal. I expect everyone has experienced back pain in their life so you are sadly probably personally aware to some degree, how unpleasant her condition is. Also remember most of us, when we experienced said pain, just injured our back as opposed to breaking it. Alas despite the pain medication this pain will also be with her for the next few months albeit, over time, dissipating. To give you some idea of the progression Carolyn has been told that in 6 weeks she may be able to sit up for 30 minutes a day and type on a computer (or at least be able to do this every other day). In any case your thoughts and for those of you so inclined, your prayers, will be greatly appreciated. Also for those of you who have quickly thought back to previous incidents (broken collar bone, broken foot, broken pelvis) and want to suggest a thought we already know what you are thinking. Carolyn was diagnosed with osteoporosis 10 years ago when she broke her collar bone after a minor incident that the doctor realized would not have broken most folks collar bone. Bone density tests and visits to specialists followed. She has been on medication for osteo, plus calcium supplements for 10 years. We do study up on it and stay current but if you have discovered a miracle cure not currently published in medical journals please feel free to share. Otherwise, we probably already know what you want to suggest but thanks for the thought. Please forgive any errors in this missive. I am more than a little tired, somewhat stressed by the accident and as those of you who know me well already know I am NOT a Good tired person. *For a parallel think surly drunk.* Carolyn should be coming home today if everything checks out this morning. The thinking is there is not much more they can do for her at the hospital so send her home to heal. So there you go facebook world. Hope you and yours are having a good day. Again, all good thoughts and prayers are appreciated. keep on keeping on. LarE.
