EMILY CARR UNIVERSITY LAUNCHES SATELLITE STUDIOS FOR TEENS IN WHISTLER AND PRINCE GEORGE Regional partnerships benefit local communities with world-class art, media and design programs for youth Vancouver, CAN, March 4, 2014 | Emily Carr University is accepting registrations for the first ever Satellite Studios for Teens to run outside the Lower Mainland. Developed and taught by University Faculty, the intensive, pre-university programs represent innovative and strategic partnerships for both the Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) and the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) respectively. Satellite Studios for Teens provide young students who are serious about pursuing a future career in the creative economy with access to a world-class institution dedicated to this field. These new regional partnerships will further the province’s commitment to strengthening connections and foundations for growth of our province’s creative economy. Both programs are multi-stakeholder collaborations, and will coordinate participation and input from various relevant councils, community groups, cultural organizations and educational institutions. The partnerships demonstrate an efficient and effective model for educational expansion that is engaging, innovative and responsive to community needs and objectives. The programs will build upon Emily Carr University’s highly successful and often full Summer Institute for Teens, which has run in Vancouver since 2003, reaching over 700 youth to date. Running in Whistler from July 7 – 18 and Prince George from July 14 – 25, earlybird registration is now available through March 31st. The studios effective and rigorous curriculum emphasizes collaboration, creative communication, critical analysis and design thinking; content will focus on locally relevant issues through a process of community research. Each of the summer intensives will integrate local site visits, engage community-based guest instructors, and support each of the partners’ strategic focuses on cultural and economic development, culminating with public-facing events in the community. “Emily Carr University has an important role to play as a champion of high quality, integrated and innovative education within our province, and beyond,” says Sadira Rodrigues, Dean of Continuing Studies. “What we offer to regional partners is leverage of our global reputation and expertise in art, design and media education.” Mayor Nancy Wilhelm-Morden said, “The Resort Municipality of Whistler’s partnership with Emily Carr University to offer the Summer Satellite Studio in Whistler is an exciting opportunity for both residents and visitors. This program strengthens our existing reputation as a destination for arts, recreation, and culture and also fits with municipal plans to pursue educational opportunities in Whistler, which support and reflect resort community priorities.” I do believe that there are great opportunities for institutions to partner together to deliver unique programming that leverages the unique strengths of each institution, says Aaron LeBlanc, Director of Ancillary Services and Continuing Studies for UNBC. Simply put, the unique opportunity for teens to explore art and design, with Emily Carr and UNBC Continuing Studies, will allow teens from the community to gain access to programming they would not normally have in the North. More information about the partnership can be found on the Emily Carr University website, including a full Partnership Profile and Q&A with both Resort Municipality of Whistlers Mayor Nancy Wilhelm-Morden and UNBCs Aaron LeBlanc, Director of Ancillary Services and Continuing Studies.
