EMPATHY, COMPASSION & TAI CHI & QIGONG New neurological research on meditation reveals that it increases the size of the empathy and compassion parts of the brain! Tai Chi has been called meditation in motion, and Qigong offers many deep meditative techniques. Meditation Montage Most people notice that after playing Tai Chi and/or Qigong, we start to become nicer people. But is there something physical going on, that actually changes the structure of our brains? It is quite possible, according to emerging research. As internal arts, meditative arts, Tai Chi and Qigong when taught as internal mind-body arts offer society a way to increase our compassion and empathy. Neurological research has found that meditation physically increases the size of the self-awareness, empathy, and compassion centers of the brain. TAI CHI & QIGONG Recent neurological research has shown that people who meditate are more capable of actualizing the life they envision. If mind-body meditative practices increase the size of the empathy, compassion, and self awareness centers of the brain, and also according to research causes us to activate to try to relieve the suffering of others, other research shows that meditation actually can make us more capable of creating the world of our visions of empathy and compassion. They become evolutionary tools that can help humanity handle the challenges of an increasingly populated planet. In 1976 the Journal of Psychology (4: 206-218, 1976) published a study showing that after one month meditators developed a more strongly defined self-concept and came to perceive their actual self as significantly closer to their ideal self, while the non-meditating control groups saw no similar changes. Neurological research showing that meditative arts can make more intelligent, creative, compassionate people is amazing. However, this study, showing that people who meditate are more capable of actualizing or making real their improving self image, is exciting beyond description. As millions of people now are exposed to mind-body practices like Tai Chi and Qigong and other meditation practices, they are becoming better people, and ALSO being changed in ways that will enable them to more effectively actually ground those qualities into a better world for all of us. As mind-body internal arts teachers, we can contribute to human evolution as we teach these meditative arts throughout society, and at a time when most needed on our planet. Pretty exciting time to be teaching the internal meditative arts.
