EMPOWER DC A GREAT SUCCESS EFFECTIVE OUTREACH 101: Build Your Skills! Saturday, August 16, 2014; 2:00 - 4:00 (If you were not there YOU Missed it! LOCATION: Potomac Gardens Community Center 700 12th Street, SE I am a Proud member of Empower DC, and I was given the opportunity to speak with an empowerment circle (along with two (2) of my colleagues) on Effective Community Outreach. Reaching out and talking to your neighbors is key to creating a cohesive community that can advocate for itself and respond to potential threats -- such as unwanted development or the selling of public property. Several Communities joined us for an Empowerment Circle to learn how to do EFFECTIVE OUTREACH followed by the opportunity to put your skills to practice in the Potomac Gardens public housing community and the surrounding neighborhood. Youth were encouraged to attend, and childcare was provided. OUR MISSION to enhance, improve and promote the self-advocacy of low and moderate income DC residents in order to bring about sustained improvements in their quality of life. We accomplish our mission through grassroots organizing and trainings, leadership development, and community education. _____________________________________________________________ ORGANIZING PRINCIPLES The organizing principles that guide the work of the organization include the following: • Work with groups of people who share a common problem; • Develop leadership through training and providing leadership opportunities, i.e. through direct experience; • Develop the self-confidence of leaders and potential leaders; • Encourage groups to develop action plans and implement them; • Use the mass media to inform the larger community about issues and to gain support; • Use confrontation when necessary as a means to force a recalcitrant target to negotiate or resolve an issue; • Leaders, rather than staff, set the agenda for the organization and carry it out.
