ENGLISH VOCAB. 1. (i) Lacks (कमी, अभाव) Meaning: does not have Example: He lacks the judgement and political acumen for the post of General Manager. (ii) Lax (परवाह, ाचरत) Meaning: loose discipline Example: One of the point of contention is the lax security for the airport personnel. 2. (i) Leach Meaning : A dish consisting of sliced meat, eggs, fruits, and spices in jelly etc. (ii) Leech ( जक) Meaning: sucking parasite Example: (a) A leech is small animal which looks like a worm and lives in water. Leeches feed by attaching themselves to other animals and sucking blood. (b) If you describe someone as a leech, you disapprove of them because they deliberately depend on other people, often making money out of them. 3. (i) Lichen (शवाक) Meaning: a fungus Example: Lichen is a group of tiny plants like moss and grows on the surface of things such as rocks, trees and walls. (ii) Liken (तलना करना) Meaning: to compare Example: If you liken one thing or person to another thing or person, you say that they are similar. The pain if often likened to being drilled through the side of the head. 4. (i) Literal (शािदक, ठीक-ठीक मलाथक) Meaning: taking words in their primary sense Example: He was saying no more than the literal truth. (ii) Littoral (कनारा) Meaning: having to do with the shore Example: In Geography the littoral means the coast. 5. (i) Ordinance (अयाश) Meaning: a rule Example: The President has promulgated an ordinance for administering the minority community. (ii) Ordnance (तोपखाना) Meaning: artillery Example: There is an ordnance factory in Jamshedpur W. Bengal. 6. (i) Overdo (अधक करना) Meaning: carried to excess Example: It is important never to overdo new exercises. (ii) Overdue (ठीक समय पर अदा न कया आ) Meaning: past time for payment or some action Example: The meeting is long overdue. 7. (i) Prophecy (भवयवाणी) Meaning: noun-foretold Example: It is his prophecy that America will not attack Iraq. (ii) Prophesy (भवयवाणी करना) Meaning: verb – to foretell Example: He prophesied that Iraq would attack Kuwait. 8. (i) Persecute (तग करना) Meaning: to harass Example: Pakistani soldiers persecuted the Hindus in a cruel manner. (ii) Prosecute (अिभयोग चलाना) Meaning: to bring before a court Example: He was prosecuted for murdering his wife. 9. (i) Prescribe (आा ना) Meaning: To direct Example: the doctor has prescribed three doses of medicine after four hours daily. (ii) Proscribe (श नकालना) Meaning: to banish Example: The minister was proscribed by the king. 10. (i) Physic (दवा) Meaning: medicine Example: No physic can cure him of cancer. (ii) Physique (शारीरक गठन) Meaning: bodily fitness Example: He possesses an attractive physique.
