ER24 has confirmed that one person has died in the Klerksdorp area due to today’s earthquake There are reports that several houses have been damaged and mines have stopped operating in the Orkney area in North West following the five-point-three magnitude tremor that rocked the centre of the country. The shaker was felt from Gaborone in Botswana to Johannesburg and even in Umhlanga in KZN. It occurred at a depth of ten kilometres. Human Settlements MEC Collen Maine is expected to visit the Orkney this afternoon. A website monitoring earthquakes, EMSC, reports that the epicentre of the tremor was near Orkney in the North West. The Council of Geo-sciences has confirmed that the quake registered 5.5 on the Richter scale and was centred in Klerksdorp. The tremor was felt in Auckland Park for more than a minute. In Pretoria the phenomenal forced both staff members at the building housing the SABC and the Government Information Communication Services to vacate their work place. - SABC News
