ESQUIRE magazine has a first person essay by Tom Junod that unfortunately cant be linked about the stigmatization of pit bulls: he makes the point that a cocker spaniel (for example) is culturally seen as an individual animal, but a pit bull (which parenthetically is not a breed but a classification) is typically seen as a type: When a cocker spaniel bites, its never as anything other than a dog. When a pit bull bites, its as a member of the breed. A pit bull is never anything but a pit bull. Its not an easy read - hes pretty honest about human mistakes, including his own. For people who have made up their minds negatively about pits, this article might just make them defensive and angry. He also braces the topics of race and class which isnt for everyone (You learn a lot about America when you own a pit bull.) - but with all those caveats, its worth the price of admission.
