ESSENDON’S asking price to Port Adelaide for disgruntled ruckman-forward Paddy Ryder is Power midfielder Hamish Hartlett. The Bombers left today’s AFL trade talks with Port Adelaide at Etihad Stadium rejecting the Power’s only offer of first-round draft pick No. 16 - and demanding a quality player in return for Ryder, who has two years on his contract at Windy Hill. Essendon list manager Adrian Dodoro told The Advertiser: “Ryder finished seventh in our best-and-fairest - so we’d expect Port Adelaide’s seventh, eight or ninth best player. But Port Adelaide not prepared to talk about any of its best 22 players.” Dodoro insisted the Bombers want to keep Ryder, despite the highly regarded ruckman quitting the club and nominating the Power as his club of choice. “It’s up to Port Adelaide,” Dodoro said of how long a deal would take to unfold for Ryder’s trade. “We want a quality player. Paddy is a quality player. We want what is fair. We want apples for apples - not apples for a bag of peanuts. “They know what we are after. We want a quality player in return. The ball is back in their court.” Asked of the risk Essendon faces in losing Ryder for no return if he lodges a “duty of care” claim against the Bombers, Dodoro said: “There is no guarantee anything will happen after this (trade period) anyway.” While Port always expected a difficult day with the Bombers on Ryder, Gold Coast football chief Marcus Ashcroft was strong on holding contracted South Australian ruckman Daniel Gorringe. “Daniel is contracted for next year - and he is a required player for the Gold Coast Suns in 2015,” Ashcroft said at the trade talks at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne. “We will talk (with Port Adelaide) and we’re interested to hear what other clubs want to offer. But right now, Daniel is a required player with us.” The Power expects Gold Coast’s position on Gorringe to change if Sydney premiership defender Nick Malceski joins the Suns on a three-year offer. The Power has offered its first-round pick No. 16 for Ryder and hit an instant impasse with the Bombers. Talks will continue this afternoon.
