EVA HEINEMANN REVIEWS CHEYENNE JACKSON EYES WIDE OPEN AT CAFÉ CARLYLE Musical Director: Willy Beaman- Piano Vancil Cooper- Drums Michael O’Brian- Bass Forget the cold when you’ve got Cheyenne Jackson heating up the Café Carlyle with his debut show called Eyes Wide Open. Blending contemporary music from Lady Gaga’s “Edge of Glory” to classics like Gershwin’s “A Foggy Day” and even more classic Elvis: “Follow That Dream”, “Teddy Bear”, and “Can’t Help Falling in Love” as a nod to his Broadway breakout role in “All Shook Up”. So how did a real small town boy with a population of 1200 people end up the toast of Broadway. You can thank great parents, a touring company of Les Miz and Marc Kurdish of all people. Of course it helps that he is phenomenally talented and easy on the eyes. This became clear when he entered the room singing “Stand By Me” dressed in black from top to toe looking elegantly tip–top. With his velvety silky voice he had me at “Besame Mucho”- Even the 3 member band is beautiful. Pianist Willy Beaman and Music Director shined playing a jazzy twinkley “Over The Rainbow”, Drummist Vancil Cooper was very innovative with this amazing cymbal with holes in it and he produced the most gorgeous sounds. Bassist Michael O’Brian was invaluable with that emotive beat. Besides moving us with his singing, Cheyenne also told us about his bleak 2 years when his grandparents died, he got divorced and remarried and most important of all he got sober. He wrote a song with Michael Feinstein’s help inspired by his Grandmother called “Red Wine Is Good For The Heart”. And this show is good for the soul. HAPPY FACE Note: If you get the chance you should also get there early to have the Dinner. It is delicious.
