The Centre for Human Rights Education: Celebrating 10 Years Australia’s policy of mandatory detention for asylum seekers The Curtin University Centre for Human Rights Education, ASeTTS and Amnesty International WA branch, invite you to a forum to mark the UN International Day in Support of Victims of Torture and the 20th Anniversary of mandatory detention in Australia, with guest speaker Richard Towle. Join us to hear Richard speak about Australia’s policy of mandatory detention of those who come to Australia seeking protection by boat and its impact upon asylum seekers in the region, followed by a case study presentation by ASeTTS and a panel discussion with a member of a local community that has been affected by this policy. About Richard Towle Richard has been UNHCR’s Regional Representative for Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and the Pacific since early 2007. Over the past 20 years, Richard has held a variety of senior positions, inside and outside of the United Nations, dealing with refugee and human rights issues. He was a Special Advisor in the Department of International Protection at the UNHCR’s headquarters in Geneva from 2003-2005, Chief of Mission for the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in the former Yugoslavia from 2001-2003, Senior Human Rights Officer at the Department of International Protection at UNHCR’s Headquarters in Geneva from 1997-2001, and Regional Protection Officer in the United Kingdom from 1994-1997. Before working with the United Nations, he was a lawyer specialising in refugee and human rights in his home country, New Zealand.
