EVENT TOMORROW: Second-Generation Decline or Advantage? Assimilation of Latinos in the U.S, 6pm BARNARD COLLEGE, SULZBERGER PARLOR, 3RD FLOOR, BARNARD HALL (3009 BROADWAY AT W. 117TH STREET, NEW YORK, NY) The recent growth of the Latino second generation in both traditional immigrant gateways and emerging destinations have raised renewed questions about their integration into American society. This project draws on the most recent data from the Current Population Survey to provide a cautious test for the competing predictions about a second-generation decline vs. a second-generation advantage. The project focuses on the top ten Latino groups in comparison with their non-Hispanic black and non-Hispanic white peers. Overall, there is evidence for advantages among Cubans, Colombians, Ecuadorians and Peruvians, alongside the persistence of disadvantages among Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Salvadorians, Guatemalans, and Hondurans. These results point to an emerging paradox of integration and inequality among Latinos in the U.S.
