EVERY AUGUST 5: A GREAT DAY FOR THE DAUGHTERS OF MARY HELP OF CHRISTIANS, A GREAT DAY FOR OUR FAMILY My good morning greeting for today is a recognition of and tribute to our Sisters, the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians. Each August 5 is a great day of celebration. On August 5, 1872 the Institute of the Daughters of mary Help of Christians came into being. In the presence of the Bishop of Acqui, Don Bosco, Fr Pestarino and some other priests, 11 novices, amongst them Mary Mazzarello, made their religious profession. Don Bosco told them: “Now you belong to a religious family that is completely Marys; there are just a few of you, deprived of means and without human approval. Let nothing disturb you. Things will change soon … I can assure you that the Institute will have a great future if you remain simple, poor and selfless” (as we read in the Chronicles of the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians). I am writing this because on August 5, in a few hours time, we will celebrate this graced event together, as is done every year on this date: the grace of the life of the Institute and the Sisters, the life and vocation of each of them and, through them, the Salesian mission amongst young boys and girls. Let me take this opportunity to tell you, dear Sisters, in the name of the whole Salesian Family, friends of the Salesian charism and young people around the world: Thank you! Thank you very much dear Sisters for the gift of your life and vocation! Thank you for your commitment and self-giving. Thank you for the testimony of your lives. May you continue to be Daughters of Mary Help of Christians as was Maín. May the Lord and the Help of Christians whose chosen daughters you are, bless you. A fond embrace. Angel F.
