EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK, Regaining Consciousness: My Encounter with Mild Brain Injury--The Silent Epidemic by Deb Angus (2014), Chapter 5, pg 219, Finding Strength in Spirituality: I found it important to create a ritual for my spiritual readings each morning—and this became a way of life for me for several years. What worked best for me was to rise naturally without a jarring alarm clock. By retiring the night before at an early hour, it would allow me to rouse around 5:00 or 5:30 a.m. so I could enjoy a relaxing aromatherapy bath (which helped immensely with nerve pain and stiffness in my left leg and left arm) before heading out to work, and I would soak for 20-30 minutes while reading. These baths provided a most comforting way to quietly wake up and prepare myself for the day ahead—this I have found is very important for an injured brain—to slowly enter into each day. I accomplished this by immersing my body in the healing waters while also immersing my soul in healing, spiritual thoughts that would fortify me for the day and help keep me centered. I cherished these morning ritual baths. Lying in the tub surrounded with bubbles, herbal soaps, and aromatic waters was the safest place I could find for my torn and shattered soul. It was important to take my time and not rush these moments. I would not allow myself to surrender to the rest of the day until I felt strengthened and ready to face yet another uncertain, exasperating day. I sought refuge in the bathtub anytime I felt scattered, overwhelmed, and scared. It was a place that garnered solitude, silence, and strength—a few minutes to acclaim a sense of sacredness.
