EXCERPTS: There is no big man or big mans sister who is among the people presently under surveillance or already quarantined in connection with this rampaging viral disease. These leaders have their children in the best schools, where ebola may never get to. They attend VIP churches and worship in aristocratic mosques. We must bow with those whose noses run and shake hands with those worn by sweats of struggle. So, it is us and not them that should bother more about this ebola. Had our leaders done what they should have done, we wont be talking about ebola in Nigeria, today. And they arent doing enough, yet. So, expect more ebola outbreaks in Nigeria, soon. Boko Haram may actually send some of its suicide agents to get the virus and spread it around. And our borders are too porous. The President must punish some people for failing to do the needful. First among the people to be hit by this hammer is Onyebuchi Chukwu, our minister of health. While I can agree that he has been doing a lot since the first ebola case was confirmed in Nigeria, he has to be punished for not doing enough to stop the virus from entering Nigeria. Recent information has shown that Patrick Sawyer who brought ebola into Nigeria was aware of his health status before coming into the country. Considering that Liberia from where Patrick Sawyer entered Nigeria has records of ebola outbreak since February, it is pertinent to ask why the Nigerian minister of health did not find it fitting to have introduced necessary checks on passengers coming from such countries. This to me, is dereliction of duty on his part. He should therefore, either resign or be made to resign. The immigration and other foreign affairs officials attached to the Nigerian embassy in Liberia should also not be spared the hammer. They ought to have been thinking ahead of time. They are there to protect Nigeria from any harm that may be coming from that country, and they failed completely in this duty to the country. Today, some countries have barred flights originating from Nigeria from entering their territory because of the ebola scare. Whatever stopped relevant Nigerian authorities from doing same earlier, is not excusable. It is high time we began to compel public officials to take responsibility for their failures. I expect some of my readers here, and elsewhere to dismiss this as being too extreme and may be, utopian, but the fact remains that public officials are appointed or elected to think and work for all of us. A public official cannot think that he or she has done well, if he only concentrates on the theatrics of dealing with the problems that are already with us, a public official will be commended if he or she takes preemptive steps to avert certain problems from getting to us. Ebola was avoidable, but certain people failed in their duty to help us avoid it. Therefore, let heads roll. thenigeriangazette/opinion-ebola-in-nigeria-let-heads-roll-onwuasoanya-fcc-jones/
