EXCITING UPCOMING EVENT: Making Silence Speak: A conversation with Yishai Jusidman Tuesday, April 08, 2014, 7:00 PM Salem State University, Marsh Hall 210 painting of a door to a gas chamber by Yishai Jusidman In a recent series of paintings entitled “Prussian Blue,” artist Yishai Jusidman (b. Mexico City, 1963) addresses the Holocaust by seeking to “generate the pictorial impression of silence as solemn and forthright as it is eloquent.” Jusidman resorts to coloring materials derived from Zyklon B compounds and pellets in order to transform photographic images of gas chambers into profound visual evocations of an unspeakable, unimaginable atrocity. The aesthetic strategy underpinning the “Prussian Blue” series is significant among contemporary efforts to grapple with the Shoah and its aftermath. As critic Christian Viveros-Faune put it in the Village Voice, “Jusidman has undertaken figurative work that re-establishes painting as a medium capable of wrestling with the thorniest questions... painting what artists have been told is simply beyond figuring.” The Salem State Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies invites you to join Professor Lisa Mulman (English) in a unique opportunity to discuss the issue of post-Holocaust aesthetic representation with Yishai Jusidman, focusing on the creation and significance of his Prussian Blue series as well as the philosophical, ethical, and pragmatic challenges of making art in the face of genocide.
