EXCLUSIVE: Wave of immigrants sneaking into U.S. slows, but many still braving trip to escape Central America violence GRANJENO, Texas — As the late afternoon sun beats down on south Texas, U.S. Border Patrol agent Joe Gutierrez climbs into a green and white Chevy Suburban to begin his daily search for migrants sneaking into the U.S. illegally. Gutierrez and his partner, who declined to give his name, head to a park along the Rio Grande, the watery border between the U.S. and Mexico. Two months ago, it was easy to find the migrants there. On this day, all they see are empty benches and swings. The agents turn on their radio. For more than an hour, there’s only silence.
