Each of the 20 clubs in the Nigerian Premier will get N10.5 million each as their share of the sponsorship for the 2012/2013 league season, PREMIUM TIMES has learnt. Nigerian football officials confirmed that the money is part of the N1.8 billion sponsorship deal signed between telecommunication giant, Globacom, and the management of Nigerian Professional Football League. The three-year sponsorship deal would see Globacom pay N550 million this season, with a 10 per cent increase in each of the next two seasons. The amount to be shared to the clubs is part of the six decisions reached at an eight- hour meeting between club representatives and the board of the League Management Company’s on Wednesday evening. Attendees at the meeting rated the ongoing Nigerian League season as above average, after which they called for a sustainable progress in the league. The parley also suggested to the Nigeria Football Association that the number of referees in the league must be pegged down while each referee should be paid N100, 000 per match. Renumeration of referees has always been a major problem in Nigerian football with host clubs sometimes asked to pay the allowances of officials; a major reason for poor officiating witnessed in Nigerian league. Wednesday’s meeting resolved to ensure proper enumeration for well selected referees. “We want referees and assistant referees to be selected on merit and also select key match officials which NFF will determine their numbers,” said Alloy Chukwuemeka, Secretary of the Club Owners Association, after the meeting. The mid-season report that was reviewed by the parley concluded that there have been several improvements from this league season compared to the last season. Sharing the N550 million With each of 20 clubs getting N10.5 million, the total to be collected by the clubs is N210 million, leaving a remainder of N340 million. PREMIUM TIMES learnt that apart from the general participation fee, clubs will also get remuneration based on their performance in the league at the end of the season. The remaining funds would be used to run the league include payment of match officials. “Money sharing can be divided into two places: money will be given to each club and also monies will be given on merit according to the performance of each one of the clubs,” Shehu Dikko, a member of the LMC, told journalists on Wednesday night. “The remaining will be spent on the cost of the league, organization, indemnities, overhead, monitoring and part of the money will be kept aside for the league development,” he added. The Nigerian League is currently in the mid- season break for the the 2012/2013 season.
