Each year many people turn to the Meningitis Trust to access emotional support following a diagnosis of meningitis. This request for support can be at any time after the disease and many people come to us months and even years after the initial diagnosis. If you yourself feel you have recovered from the immediate illness but are still struggling with the emotional impact of the disease you may find that having professional support from a counsellor can help you to deal more fully with the trauma of the disease. Speaking with someone who is outside your immediate circle of family or friends can give you the opportunity to speak openly about the experience of having meningitis. The confidential, professional service is available throughout the UK and is completely free of charge. Support for families Many parents and other family members also access our support when someone they love has had meningitis. Their immediate concerns will be to care and support this person during their recovery from the disease. Often, it is only when this person is in better health or obtaining the support they need, that they can focus on their own needs. They may then consider speaking to a counsellor about the illness and the impact it has had on their own lives. Bereavement counselling Counselling following a death from meningitis offers an opportunity to talk to someone who is experienced in listening to someone who is bereaved. This support can focus on the emotional trauma of the loss in your life and can help you to begin to make sense of what has happened. "I couldn’t find a way to get over the pain of losing my son. I took up the Meningitis Trust counselling service, and it was a great help to me." Emotional support for Children Following an experience of meningitis many children will not want to talk about what has happened to them, but changes in their behaviour, sleeping, eating, interaction with others will suggest that they are experiencing some form of emotional distress. Access to a creative therapy which can help them express their feelings in a gentle, supportive environment, can be very helpful. We can make a referral to a professional therapist who can use art, play, drama or music to help your child make sense of what has happened. This can also be very helpful for siblings as well as children who have had meningitis.
