Earlier in the week, I watched this beautifully developed documentary, “Sisters”, which tells the story of health workers in Ethiopia, Haiti and Cambodia. After watching the film, I promptly got in touch with the filmmaker, Brenda Davis, and we exchanged pointers. Our email conversation and this morning meeting with a team of doctors and midwives from KK Hospital has got me all psyched up for my upcoming trip to Kampong Chhnang. I am stoked. In 10 days time, I will be off to Kampong Chhnang where the team from KK Hospital will be conducting two sessions of midwifery training for a total of 60 midwives from all over the province. Empowering these 60 ladies is a big deal because they care for some 500,000 people in Kampong Chhnang. Other than photographing what goes on in the hospital, I am also looking to spend more time in the villages (fingers crossed). This would be my fourth trip to Cambodia in 17 months documenting about the realities of childbearing in the country. I will not claim to be an expert in this field yet, but I think I have seen a lot more than most people. And what keeps me going is knowing that a lot more lives can actually be saved if we give this issue due attention. This is a project I see myself working on for the next couple of years, and if you would like to be updated on how it’s been coming along, drop me your email and I will be happy to add you to the mailing list.
