Earlier on that afternoon, Grenadians would have heard as part of the news of the Montserrat-based Radio Antilles, an announcement that George Louison, Unison Whiteman, Kenrick Radix, Jacqueline Creft, Norris Bain and Lyden Ramdhanny had all resigned from the Government, which had the effect, if only in terms of perception, of worsening the crisis. Already, word of mass demonstrations expected the next day was circulating and during the course of the night both Louison and Radix had been detained. Whiteman had earlier gone into hiding after refusing to speak with Coard on the phone. But there was still hope among members of the C.C. that, following the discussions with Bishop, the problems would have been amicably resolved by the next morning. The proposal had been that the status quo prior to the Joint Leadership decision would have been restored and that Bishop would publicly accept responsibility for the crisis. Bishop then made two requests: that he be allowed to reserve his answer until the following morning at 10 o’clock and that arrangements be made for him to speak with Louison, Whiteman and Julien Rizo, the Cuban Ambassador to Grenada, before that. The stage had been set once more for the singing of the ‘Internationale,’ or so the optimists thought. (October 18th, 1983) Excerpt from MY MOTHER AND I - the epic story of Grenada.
