Earlier this morning, I surprised myself by doing something that I hadnt done in a long time, something that I had doubted Id ever be able to do again: run for 75 minutes. I typically run no more than 20 minutes, for 1.7 to 2 miles, before I run out of breath and start panting. What was different this time? Did I have a good sleep last night? Not particularly. I could would have like to sleep 8 hours instead of 7, but was awakened by my roommates alarm. Was I well-nourished before I started running? Not really. I had had just a cup of coffee; I hadnt eaten since last night. Did I warm up adequately? Perhaps. Maybe the one hour I spent in the kitchen the first thing in the morning before running, attending to chores such as loading the dishwasher, cleaning the stove, microwave and counters, sorting out the trash and the recyclables was enough of a warm-up. When I went running on the sidewalks of the hilly, up-and-down terrain in my neighborhood, I didnt pant, nor did my chest hurt, nor did I feel like taking walking breaks on up-slopes - at least not until I had run for an hour. The 6.3-mile run at a rate of around 11:40 mins/mile was decent by my standards, but woefully slow by those of many of my friends! I enjoyed it.
