Earlier today I encountered a group of young people on Haile Selasie Avenue. They had blocked a section of the road, apparently to make a statement. I chatted with some of them, before they were dispersed by police, and I could read desperation all over their faces. They clearly had nothing to lose. Police may as well have shot some of them. Would it matter, anyway? They would be mere statistics. These are young men (and women) have potential. They can become something if they are helped to believe in themselves. #SelfBelief means the whole world. It is so easy to dismiss these young people. But I always think of what they could have become, given the right environment, and what I could have become if I hadnt been lucky to join Starehe Boys Centre years back.
