Earlier today I made a post about the five love languages. Now I’d like to breakdown two of the often misunderstood love Languages. Receiving of Gifts and Words of Affirmation. Receiving of Gifts People often raise their eyebrows at the concept that some ones Love Language could be Receiving of gifts. This is so because we have been trained to shun what on the surface appears to be a materialistic outlook, however ‘Receiving of Gifts’ has nothing to do with material gain. Here’s an example. If you go into the home of almost any parent you will see a poorly drawn or made item taking pride of place, in full public view. It’s cherished, though it has little actual financial value and why? Because it came from their child…..because it was made specifically for them…..because it’s the only one like it in the world……because it’s personal…….because it’s heart felt. But most importantly it tells the receiver that they were on your mind even when they were not present. That is the secret of Receiving Gifts as a love language. Monetary value is unimportant….in this case it is truly the thought that counts. So the poor man walking home who picks a wild flower from the side of the road for his wife gains more love points than the mogul who send his secretary out to buy his wife’s anniversary present. (Ever wonder why such women risk it all for the pool boy? LOL) Words of Affirmation This love language is often misunderstood because we misread or should I say misunderstand the meaning of the word Affirmation in this context. Initially some consider Words of Affirmation and words of flattery or ego stroking, it’s neither. They are not seeking to hear how nice they look or how great they are, to quote a friend; they just like “steak on a plate”. They just wanna hear words which clearly state how YOU feel about them and what they mean to you. These are the practical people, often they are accidental romantics. They do things which to them are totally practical, yet to the receiver appear extremely romantic. Now just picture how this works if the receiver just happens to have Act of service as their primary Love Language……. Good right?
