Earlier tonight I was given this article by my wife Yvonne called “What Students Really Need To Hear” and it was a very interesting read that I highly recommend (You can find the link below). To be honest it reminded me of so many of my instructors at Sidney Lanier High School. This instructor truly cares about his students and his message is something that all of our educators should take to heart. The Superintendent of Northside ISD, Dr. Woods, read this to his instructors at Convocation this year as a message to his staff that their profession IS PERSONAL. They are in the customer service business and they have a huge responsibility to prepare our children for the real world because they are our future. Our world is harsh and will chew our children up and spit them out with no regards for what happens to them if they cannot handle it. Playing organized sports where there are no winners or losers sets our children up because life is full of winners and losers. As educators, our teachers need to find ways to challenge them, relate to them, mentor them, show them what life is all about. My educators at Lanier were not afraid to do this; sure they taught the subject content but in the end they showed me how it applied to real life and not only how the content applied but how the thought process I used to get there did as well. A child will drop out of school NOT because they cannot grasp the content, but because they cannot find anyone to relate to, learn from, mentor them, and more importantly cares about them enough to show them the real life application. I am proud to say that I have many family and friends in the education profession and each one of them does it not for the money (we all know they don’t get paid enough) but because of the love of educating our youth. I know it is hard my friends but remain steadfast in what you do because you DO MAKE A DIFFERENCE in the lives of our children. What you do IS personal. Continue to educate our children on life and setting them up for success!!! I am proud to call you my family and friends and appreciate EVERYTHING that you do!!!
