Early County Courthouse Square in Blakey, Ga. We stumbled onto Smitys Grill (hole-the-wall) where we ate the most delicious lunch of hamburger steak drenched in mushroom gravy that was to die for. Smitys has been in this same location since early circa 1940s. Using same stove/grill installed in 1950. Has had several owners with the most recent passing away four months ago. Mr. Fred owned and cooked for tha last twenty three years. Only thing ever changed is the streetside brick facade. Until the last several years he had no competation. All the business people on the square ate here. The walls are covered with napkin drawings from children and sweethearts declaring their love in pictures and declarations. Some have came back when love got lost to get their tiles taken down, but the owner said once its up its up. She has the napkins put onto tiles and onto the walls. Walls in the expanded side is going to get covered because of no more space in the main side. The place has been featured in newspapers, magazines and on television. The smell from the street will draw you in. I usually declare these little places greasy spoon places, but today that moniker was dropped by yours truly. I ask to take pictures and was given permission with big smiles and Why yes, people do it all the time. I talked with most of the staff and chewed the fat with several customers. I just love meeting people and hearing their stories this way. Even got a big old hug from one of them. One customer told me, You can sit here with us or stand against the wall. Big laugh from other diners. My kind of place, my kind of people.
