Early in Hoosier history, Quakers settled all across central Indiana and proclaimed the principal of reciprocal freedom. Their emphasis on fairness guaranteed that whatever freedom I enjoy, I must grant to you. In the mid-1860s, Indianas leadership, especially GOP Gov Oliver Morton and US Rep Robert Owen, strongly supported Congressional Reconstruction and the equal rights of all free African-Americans and freedmen liberated by the Civil War. These radical ideas of equality and fairness are our basic Hoosier values. We have every right to assert this powerful traditional!
