Early on in my Christian walk I was interested in obtaining Biblical training from higher educational institutions. The more I considered it, the more I became faced with some challenging questions: Is it necessary for Christians to go to Bible college? Doesnt the Biblical model of discipleship portray Christians learning from within the local church? Dont higher education systems put too much emphasis on knowledge and intellect rather than ministry and service? Besides, all big-name seminaries eventually become compromised and secularized (i.e., Harvard, Princeton, Cambridge, Oxford, etc.). Why run the risk of becoming indoctrinated with anti-Biblical concepts? While there is legitimacy with each of those questions, if we are not careful we can over emphasize the negative aspects or risks of pursuing theological degrees. Over the years I have witnessed many Christians speak negatively about those who have sought this kind of training. I would like to provide a fresh glimpse at Bible college and seminary training by addressing a few faulty presuppositions. WAM3
