Earth provides enough to satisfy every mans needs, but not every mans greed. ~ Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) The preeminent leader of Indian nationalism in British-ruled India I have spent a great deal of time with this idea in the last few years, coming to terms with the changes in my life. Ten years ago everything looked different in my future. I had made many sacrifices in my personal life to support that dream. Those choices helped to build an amazing beautiful family, with a man I was proud to call my husband. I dont regret any of of those choices, but financially it has changed everything and that can be a little overwhelming at times. The one thing it was allowed me to do is begin to understand what is necessary and important and what things are just trimmings. I will be the first to admit that some of the trimmings are a little difficult to leave behind, which is becoming my lesson in being enough. It has been a little difficult to leave behind some of the people who may no longer see this trim less person as enough. It has been truly a gift to find people who accept me without my trimmings. i still long for someone to share my life with (please dont add: the perfect person is out there he just hasnt shown up yetor it will happen honestly something breaks a little inside every time I hear it.) but that person would never trimmings. It feels wonderful to live without the weight of the things that were just plain wasteful. They took up space that wasnt really used, they stole time from my family that I can never have back. I worried about having room for things that didnt do anything but sit there. I cleaned around them (or not) they collected more things that cost me something more important then money, my time. This last year has given me time. I dont need a big plot of land, a postage stamp will be enough. I dont need a big house, there will always be enough room for the people who really want to be there. My family is mine, it looks different from everyone elses and seems to grow a little more all the time, its funny, they dont seem to take up any space. If I keep making the physical things in my life smaller, it seems that maybe there will be enough for all those things that do so much more then take of space. I still am not really certain how things will work, but not cramming it full of wasteful things seems to be a step in the right direction. So its earth day. I used to walk around town with my kids, and anyone elses kids, and pick up garbage. Ice cream for all when we were done. I invite you, this year, to start to look at your lives and think about the things that take more then they give or that might just be trimmings that attract or collect what isnt really important. Do you hold it because it truly serves you and helps to support those around you or do you hold it because it you think it gives you worth. I find the less I have the more I can be. I think thats the ice cream. If anyone is wondering,!the very best quality vanilla is my favorite, so many possibilities with a solid foundation.
