Eashwaramma just called up from Annapurnas phone. Her body is racked with the chikun guniya post fever pains. I shouted at her for her having brought it on herself by carrying groundnut leaf for her cow a whole day because Devarajulu offered it to her free. With all my health and nourishment the pains left me debilitated for weeks ... I shudder to think of her. Kavya, her grandchild, is getting fodder for the cow, cooking, cleaning, preparing the decoctions for the grandmother - and then leaving for school ... and coming back and taking the cow grazing ... There is only this very little we can do for another ... but that we have to do. Beyond that we share in their pain, thats all. I told her that there is much goodwill for her. Not to take on labour that she is unable to. A friends 89 year old mother called me close and gave me 1000/- for Diwali clothes for Kavya out of her savings. When I told her that I was sending the clothes with Nagesh tomorrow, I could see her beam down the phone ... then i said I was also sending the chocolates Anjali delivered for them ... and i could see the radiant smile ... As I as grow older, and less sure of myself and science ... i am surer that sacrifices and goodwill circle and circle, and it is this that keeps the earth spinning and the rains falling ... It is the sacrifice, the yagna that matters ... and only that.
