Easily mistaken for leaf litter, this Suriname toad, Pipa pipa, lies motionless while it awaits its prey to pass by. This species is best known for its peculiar reproductive lifestyle in which the breeding pair position fertilized eggs on the female’s back. Her skin grows over the eggs and they hatch and endure their tadpole stage within pockets in the female’s skin. Once they metamorphose into tiny toadlets, they emerge from the female’s back as completely independent young. Photos by Nicole Chaney.
