Eastbury Eagles vs Elmswell FC Match Report: Author: Will Gough - Eastbury Number 9 With a number of regulars missing from action, you could have been forgiven for thinking that Eagles were in for a long morning (in one sense true - read on). Playing away to Elmswell who are unbeaten in the league above and whom beat Occold (last friendly that Eagles lost 11-2) 2-0, Eagles put on a spirited display coming within 60 seconds of winning the match 2-1. Eastburys management came up with a clever ploy to change formation to 4-4-2 with Will Nicholls finding himself up front alongside the experienced and talented Gough. The match went to extra time following a last minute equaliser ending 4-2 to Elmswell with a goal in each half of extra time. The day began with an early drive up from London, setting off at 7:30am via the A406, M11, A11 and A14. Arriving at the sugar beat, it was clear that despite a slightly dilapidated squad, spirits were high and determination was present and correct. Onto the game... From kick off Elmswell got their first chance in the game, immediately causing trouble down the right hand side. A few minutes later Eastbury found themselves a goal down through a set piece and a good Elmswell header into the top corner leaving Ollie with no chance. The game would soon turn and encouragement for Eastbury came with their first chance coming along soon after going down 1-0 as Will Nicholls (sent clear by John) had a decent effort well saved by the opposition keeper. Not long after, the mighty Gough found a fine through ball for Nicholls again who calmly dispatched to bring scores level. Towards the end of the first half, Nicholls found the net again from all of 2 yards following a fine freekick and flick on by the sensational Gough. Halftime came after 45 minutes plus stoppages, with calls for more of the same from Manager Brown and Captain Fordham. With a reasonably comfortable second half coming to an end with a couple of fine saves from Ollie, things seemed under control. Unfortunately, with 55 seconds remaining on the clock (confirmed by the referee) Elmswell managed to find the elusive equaliser, sending the game into extra time. With a goal in each half for Elmswell the game petered out, but not without a want of trying. Positive of the day: All can be proud of the performance put in when heavy underdogs. Negatives of the day: The last minute bloody equaliser meant that I was late home and missed the start of the Wolves game away at Reading. I wont bore you with a summary on this match though. Conclusion: Sterling effort from all, with special mentions to Will Nicholls, Ollie Chapman and Dan Turner. Suffice to say that Gough had a stormer with both assists. Official MOTM to come from Brown in due course, with results currently hanging in the balance. For me, every man in yellow on the pitch deserves this honour. Now to watch Europe romp home in the Ryder Cup. See you next week for Lavenham FC Match Report.
