Eastbury Eagles vs Lavenham FC Author Will Gough - Eastbury Number 9 A week after a strong performance against higher league opposition, Eagles found themselves going toe to toe with another 3rd division side in a hard fought battle, again decided by a late goal. On this occasion, it was Eagles that benefited, coming from 1-0 down to win the game 2-1, with a goal in the 88th minute. With the exception of the absent Dan Turner, replaced by Alex Smith, Eastbury Eagles Manager Mark Brown named an unchanged side from the team that put in a spirited display last week to Elmswell FC. Team Selection and Formation: Olly Chaplin Michael Hickman---Mitchell Bragg---Paul Brockwell---Nathan Bolton Alex Smith---Elliot Chaplin---John Fordham---Ross Harvey Will Gough-----Will Nicholls Subs: Ross Burch, Stuart Plaster, Paddy McGuiness, Iain Bentley, Mark Brown Once the designated Lavenham pooper scooper had managed to clear the field of play, Eagles got the game underway at a high tempo, under the request of Brown, controlling the first 15-20 minutes of the game. Somewhat against the run of play, Eastbury found themselves a goal down and chasing the game. The goal seemed to give the opposition a lift and Eagles lost confidence for the rest of the half with their earlier passing play, resorting to tactics of old and the thankless long ball. The half time whistle came at a good time for Eastbury, providing an opportunity to regroup and regain composure. HT Lavenham FC 1 Eastbury Eagles 0. Mark Brown made the decision to throw on Stuart Plaster for Ross Harvey, at half time. The second half started much like the first, with Eagles finding their feet early on and searching for the illusive equaliser. Despite a good amount of possession and probing, Eagles were unable to carve out any clear goal scoring opportunities and consequently, Mark Brown decided to change things up, bringing on Iain Bentley (for Will Nicholls) and shortly after Ross Burch (for Mitchell Bragg). Within 30 seconds of the inspirational Burchs introduction, Eagles found the equaliser in quite sensational style, with a goal sure to be in the running for goal of the season. John Fordhams laser-like pass dissected the Lavenham defence and released Gough, who coolly stepped inside one opponent and from the left edge of the box, curled a delightful effort into the extremities of the top right hand corner, causing pandemonium in the away dugout. Following the equaliser, there was only one side going to win the game, with Eagles laying siege to a shell-shocked (due to the class of the equaliser) Lavenham side. With the game looking set for extra-time, Eagles made the all important break-through, with Iain Bentleys precision pass down the right wing, freeing Alex Smith, whose cool cross left Elliott Chaplin with a tap in finish to win the game. Paddy came on for the final few minutes holding the ball up well and leading to Eagles closing the game out in style. Full Time: Lavenham FC 1 Eastbury Eagles 2 Positive of the day: Eagles preserve and extend their record of being unbeaten this season over 90 minutes. Negative of the day: Too much traffic on the return journey home. Conclusion: Another fine display bringing an end to a five game spree of cup games. League games start next week, with Eagles impressive start to the season providing great optimism. Man of the Match: John Fordham Goal of the Day: WOW Thanks for reading, if you got this far. Onwards to Liberty next week.
