Easy to judge while eating chips on our computer watching a video. Thousands of negative comments from folks who know nothing about growth and maturation of bones, muscle, neural and hormonal systems during pre puberty, puberty and post puberty. There are primal movements the body and mind were custom made to do and primal patterns the mind and body naturally crave to feel. Push, pull, squat, press and with balance and movement integrated. The inside of their cerebral cortex is saying thank you and they are actually developing motor programs as well as building brain cells and laying down osteoblasts in bones all from this loaded primal movement. I had my kids on balance devices showing feats of strength from the toddler age onwards - not because I coaches them - but because they were drawn to anything they could balance on and express strength with basic primal physical expression. The physical movements are excellent and completely appropriate. We used to do all kinds of whole body moves at same ages in gymnastics, on monkey bars at playground, walking around on hands, climbing things - such as onto the school roof then hanging off it and jumping from high heights. All things that would either be banned today or avoided to play video games or absent from adopting the parents sedentary lifestyle. The activity is excellent and there is fun in moving physically and as well self efficacy in learning to progress that translates to an I can do it attitude in all of life. Wed climb trees and try and swing and jump around like monkeys. Physical and risk and challenge. Perfect. Today I would have to sit in a chair and wear a helmet with a seat belt on watching reality shows stationary. LOL Come on - the point is, anything that gets someone moving is a good thing. We have normalized obesity and sedentary to the point a kid doing a balance push up creates a social media frenzy. The only part folks might question, unless they prefer their kids sedentary and obese with a less athletic body more prone to drop out and avoid sports and activity later in life, is the culture of the father as coach - pushing too hard OR giving a sense of achievement; and the shirts off to pose versus taking pride in the ability and effort. That is up for discussion. Having a body that works and is put to work with physical exertion is not. These boys have a physicality they can apply to all sports and activities they enjoy. Kids naturally love to lift, jump, run, play, and express their physicality - until nuture squahes nature and unfortunately much of todays nurturing is societal learning that does just the opposite.
