Eaters of the Dead by Michael Crighton, written in 1976 - This is the 1st book from the list Im starting with. If any of you in the group can read it along with me, at the same time, as suggested by Dorothy Hammond, we can have a group review and discussion. I would look forward to that. The 1st 3 chapters are a retelling of Ahmad Ibn Fadlans personal account of his actual journey North and his observations of Vikings from Sweden in AD 922. The rest of the story is based on Beowulf. Ibn is sent as an ambassador to the King of the Volga Bulgars. He never arrives, but instead is conscripted by a group of Vikings to take part in a heros quest as the 13th member of their group to comply with a soothsayers requirement for success. They travel North to do battle with the mist-monsters, or wendol, possible relic Neanderthals who fight while wearing bear skins. Eaters of the Dead was made into the film The 13th Warrior in 1999, staring Antonio Banderas. I loved the film and Im loving the book.
